ETIAS Application Form for British Travellers

From November 2023, British travellers to the EU must complete the ETIAS application form and apply online for a visa waiver before arriving in Europe. This will become an obligation for all third-country nations entering the European Union for short trips of under 90 days once the system launches.

This new security measure is set to function in a similar way to the US ESTA or Canadian eTA. Once applicants have obtained an ETIAS visa waiver for UK citizens it will be electronically linked to the holder’s passport, allowing for unlimited trips to the EU within a 3-year period.

The ETIAS application for British citizens can be completed at home in under 10 minutes and approval can be given in under 24 hours. Read on to learn how to apply for ETIAS and complete the online form correctly when it launches.

What do UK citizens need to apply ETIAS?

To accurately complete the EU ETIAS application form, UK citizens must provide essential data about each adult and minor traveller in their party. Applicants will need the following items on hand when they complete the form:

  • Their passport
  • An active email address
  • A credit/debit card

When filling in the application form, registrants will need to provide a few items of essential personal data. This will include their:

  • Name
  • Nationality
  • Date of birth
  • Email address
  • Passport details

The person completing this form will also be asked some crucial security questions regarding their:

  • Employment
  • Criminal history
  • Previous visa applications
  • Past travel to conflict areas

In addition, the applicant must provide the name of the first country that they will enter the Schengen Zone from. However, once in the EU, British visa waiver holders can travel to any of the 26 countries participating in the Schengen agreement without limitations or further checks.

Once the traveller’s data is submitted and processed a response will be sent to the email address registered during the application. This will contain either the approval or rejection of the visa waiver.

It is not necessary to print off a copy of the ETIAS visa waiver. However, travellers may choose to carry a printout of their approval email with them during their trip as extra proof of their eligibility to be in the Schengen Area.

How long does it take to get an ETIAS?

The ETIAS application for UK citizens can be completed quickly in just 10-15 minutes. As long as all the information provided is accurate and correct, a visa waiver could be issued within a few minutes by the EU.

In the majority of cases, an ETIAS is expected to be approved within 24 hours of submitting the online form. However, UK applicants are advised to apply at least 72 hours before departing for an EU country in case any errors get flagged up during the process.

ETIAS Validity

To obtain an ETIAS travellers must apply online. Once the visa waiver has been approved it will remain valid for 3 years from its date of issue. However, this travel authorisation for UK citizens is linked to the passport used during the registration process, therefore if it changes the ETIAS will no longer be valid.

Can the ETIAS be cancelled?

When passengers complete an ETIAS application for UK travellers there are a few scenarios that can lead to the visa waiver being cancelled or denied. This might be for the following reasons:

  • The information provided isn’t correct.
  • The requested documents haven’t been provided.
  • The applicant doesn’t meet the necessary conditions to enter the EU safely.

Additionally, it is important to remember that an ETIAS is linked specifically to the passport used to register the visa waiver. If the holder’s passport expires or it is lost or stolen and subsequently replaced, it will be necessary to obtain a new ETIAS to pair with the new document.

Furthermore, an ETIAS could be invalidated if the applicant enters the EU with a different passport than the one used to register. This might be the case if the passenger holds dual nationality status and has more than one passport in their name.

What can UK citizens do if the ETIAS is cancelled?

If a UK passenger is rejected for an ETIAS or has their waiver cancelled, there are a few options available.

When an application is rejected, the EU will provide a justification for this decision. Usually, it will be possible to amend the details provided and to reapply successfully.

Alternatively, the applicant can appeal the decision. However, if the reasons provided for the denial of a visa waiver aren’t corrected it might lead to further rejections.

If an ETIAS has been cancelled due to the expiration or loss of a passport, it will be necessary to apply for a new visa waiver. The applicant will have to complete the online form with the information from their new travel documents.

Can the ETIAS be extended?

An ETIAS authorisation cannot be extended once it expires. When the visa waiver has lapsed it will be necessary to apply for another travel permit.

However, there is no limit on how many times an applicant may obtain an ETIAS waiver. Therefore there is no reason that an extension would be necessary as a new 3-year travel authorisation can be quickly and easily obtained when needed.
