ETIAS Austria for British
ETIAS APPLICATIONTravellers from the UK visiting Austria or any of the Schengen Area countries do not need a visa.
However, from 2026, British citizens should apply online for an ETIAS visa waiver before travelling to Austrian territory.
Austria Entry Requirements from the UK
Currently, the only requirement for UK nationals visiting Austria is having a passport valid for at least 3 months after the date the traveller will leave the Schengen zone.
With the introduction of the ETIAS for Schengen countries, these entry requirements for Austria will change.
UK travellers visiting Austria must possess the ETIAS visa waiver, while the passport validity requirement will be reduced to 3 months from the date of entry.
ETIAS for UK citizens will be easy to get online by registering and filling out an application form at least 72 hours before departure.
The ETIAS Austria will be valid for multiple entries and allow British citizens to spend up to 90 days within 180 days in Austria for tourism, business, short-term study, or transit.
When will ETIAS be necessary to travel from the UK to Austria?
Although the official date has not been announced, ETIAS will likely become available to UK travellers from 2026.
Until the official launch, British citizens can continue to visit Austria visa-free. They, however, must meet passport requirements.
ETIAS will be valid for 3 years from the date of approval or until the passport of the ETIAS holder expires, whichever comes first.
How to apply for ETIAS Austria?
UK visitors can apply for ETIAS Austria by completing the online application form, which should take a few minutes.
Applicants are required to provide the following in their ETIAS application form:
- Personal details: full name, nationality, gender, date and place of birth
- Passport details: number, issuing country, date of issuance and expiry
- Contact information: home address, phone number, email address
- Answer security questions
To complete the application, British citizens travelling to Austria have to pay the ETIAS fee by credit or debit card. It is vital to provide a valid email address to receive the approved ETIAS.
UK citizens can expect to receive the approved ETIAS within 24 to 48 hours after submitting their application. Applicants are encouraged to apply at least 72 hours prior to departure.
Delays in processing the Austria ETIAS can happen if spelling mistakes or inaccuracies are detected in the application form. British nationals should double-check the information provided to ensure it is correct and up to date.
Note: Dual passport holders must use the same passport to apply for the ETIAS and to travel to Austria.
Travel to Austria after Brexit
While the UK no longer participates in the EU agreement that allows freedom of movement between member states, Austria still welcomes British citizens without additional travel requirements. When the ETIAS program is launched, however, UK nationals should have a valid and approved ETIAS to enter Austrian territory.
British visitors must be aware of a few changes during their arrival in Austria and for the duration of their stay:
- UK passport holders are no longer able to enter Austria through EU border gates
- Travellers must have a passport no older than 10 years and with at least 3 months of validity beyond the intended exit date
- UK citizens need a visa to work in Austria for longer than 3 months
- Travellers may need to provide a return ticket and proof of funds sufficient for their stay in Austria.

Recommended Insurances to Travel to Austria
The UK European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is valid until the expiry date mentioned on the card. After this time, travellers need to apply for a GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) to be covered in Austria and other EU countries.
This insurance, however, is not valid in the following Schengen countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway. Furthermore, the EHIC and GHIC do not replace travel insurance. Travellers should get travel insurance suitable for their needs when visiting Austria.
