Requirements to enter Greece from the UK

British citizens can visit Greece for up to 90 days without a visa. Tourists and business travellers can enter the country using their valid UK passport.

From 2026, British nationals will also need an ETIAS authorisation to visit anywhere in the Schengen area, including Greece.

ETIAS is not a visa, but it will be a mandatory entry requirement for UK tourists.

British citizens should register online before departure. ETIAS will facilitate safer visa-free travel to Greece by pre-screening foreign visitors arriving in the Schengen area without a visa.

ETIAS for Greece will be valid for:

  • 3 years or until the UK passport expires
  • Multiple trips to Greece or other Schengen countries
  • Trips for business, tourism, or transit

When will ETIAS be necessary to travel from the UK to Greece?

ETIAS for Greece will be available from 2026. Pre-departure registration will become mandatory following a short implementation period.

Travellers from Britain and other eligible third countries should apply online to enter the Schengen zone.

Travel to Greece after Brexit

Since Brexit, travelling to Greece with a UK passport has changed.

Third-country travel rules apply to British citizens now that the United Kingdom has left the European Union.

British passport holders may only stay in Greece visa-free for up to 90 days and will need ETIAS to travel from 2026.

The new visa waiver is one of several changes, others include:

  • Passports issued by the UK must be valid for at least 3 months after the intended exit date and must not be more than 10 years old
  • When entering Greece, visitors from the UK may no longer use EU border gates
  • British citizens could be asked for proof of onward travel or funds
  • To work in Greece or stay longer than 3 months, a visa is required

Tourists also need to be aware of changes to mobile roaming charges and health cover when visiting Greece on holiday.

Recommended insurance to travel to Greece

British passengers can continue to use their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) until it reaches its expiry date.

With a valid EHIC, visitors from the UK can receive state-provided healthcare if they fall ill or have an accident in Greece.

Due to Brexit, expired EHIC cards are being replaced by a new Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC).

Neither the EHIC nor the GHIC is a substitute for travel insurance when visiting Greece. British nationals should take out insurance with adequate coverage for medical costs.
