ETIAS Netherlands for British
ETIAS stands for European Travel Information Authorization System, and it is a new travel authorization implemented by the EU for British visitors travelling to the Netherlands and the rest of Schengen Area states.
The ETIAS is a visa waiver, not a visa, and will soon be a mandatory document when visiting Dutch territory from the UK.
The Netherlands entry requirements from the UK
With the introduction of the ETIAS, UK travellers visiting the Netherlands will need to meet the following entry requirements:
- Having a passport valid for at least 3 months from the date of arrival in the Netherlands and not older than 10 years
- Having an approved ETIAS visa waiver
The ETIAS will be easy to request online and will allow UK citizens to visit the Netherlands for up to 90 days within every 180-day period for tourism, transit, or business.
The validity of the ETIAS will be of 3 years from the date of approval or until the expiry date of the passport, depending on which happens first. UK travellers will be permitted multiple entries into the Netherlands with the ETIAS.
When will ETIAS be necessary to travel from the UK to the Netherlands?
ETIAS will likely be required to travel from the UK to the Netherlands in November 2023. The official launch date is not yet available.
Currently, and until the launch of the ETIAS program, UK travellers can still travel to the Netherlands visa-free for stays of up to 3 months out of every 6 months.
How to apply for ETIAS Netherlands?
To apply for the ETIAS for the Netherlands, UK visitors must fill in an online application form and pay the ETIAS processing fee by credit or debit card.
In the online application form, British travellers must provide their personal and passport details, including:
- Full Name
- Nationality
- Date and place of birth
- Passport number and issuing country
- Passport date of issuance and expiry
- Contact details including home address and phone number
- A valid email address
In addition to these details, applicants are required to answer a set of health and security-related questions.
Note: All the information provided must be accurate. Errors, including spelling mistakes, can lead to a delay in obtaining the ETIAS. Applicants must make sure they submit the application accurately filled in.
Most ETIAS applications are approved within 24 to 48 hours. In some cases, the process can take slightly longer. To be sure they will obtain their ETIAS Netherlands in time for their trip, UK citizens should apply at least 72 hours before departure.
Travel to the Netherlands after Brexit
Even after Brexit, UK travellers can still visit the Netherlands visa-free for short-term stays. However, the UK exit from the EU has brought along a few changes in international travel:
- British citizens now need a valid passport to visit the Netherlands, which must be no older than 10 years on the day of arrival in the Netherlands and with at least 6 months of validity
- UK passports are no longer accepted at the dedicated EU border gates at airport arrivals
- Long-term study or employment in the Netherlands may only be possible with a visa
- UK travellers may be asked to show proof of a return ticket and sufficient funds for their intended stay in the Netherlands.

Recommended insurances to travel to the Netherlands
The UK EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) remains valid also outside of the UK until the date of expiry mentioned on the card.
After the EHIC has expired, British nationals will need to apply for a GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card), which will allow them to receive free or reduced state healthcare in the Netherlands and other EU countries. The EHIC and the GHIC are not valid in Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland.
Aside from health insurance, UK travellers are also encouraged to get travel insurance to travel to the Netherlands.
